Black Music Association in 1979
June is Black Music Month designated officially as such by President Jimmy Carter in 1979. The month-long celebration was the creation of Mtume family friends and Philadelphians Kenny Gamble, Dyana Willliams and Ed Wright, as founders of the Black Music Association (BMA), a trade group the created to ensure the "preserving, protecting, and perpetuating of black music on an international level".
These articles from Central New Jersey's Courier News profiles both the BMA and the first celebration of Black Music Month that year.
